Types of Allergy Tests or Methods

Skin rashes, abdominal pain, and vomiting are some of the mildest food allergy symptoms. However, symptoms can occasionally quickly progress to anaphylaxis which can be fatal.

Anaphylaxis can impact your entire body, including your ability to breathe. Furthermore, it is impossible to predict when an allergic reaction would turn from a mild one to a major one.

Thus, it is wise to consult an allergist or your doctor who will perform certain tests and include blood tests to find out the food that triggers certain reactions in your body.

Identifying each type of food allergen is performed through different types of tests. No matter what blood test you want to undergo allergy associates like AzAllergy can perform that blood test.

You will have to arrive at the nearest Lab Corp, the associate will draw blood and provide quick results.

Types of Tests to Identify Specific Allergies

Skin Testing

This is utilized to identify allergies, to certain medicines and drugs, food, insect stings, and potential environmental or seasonal changes.

The suspected allergen is applied to the skin during the skin test, and the findings are read after 15 minutes.

Patch/Skin Test

This is used to calculate the amount of an underlying detector or agent in people who get contact dermatitis.

The suspected agents are applied on the back as patches. In 48 hours, the patches are removed. 2-5 days after the patches are removed, the findings are read.

Blood Test

Through Total IgE Test You can find out how much IgE is present in your blood overall. Test for specific IgE concentrations in the blood associated with a particular allergen.

The doctors can identify what is particularly causing your allergy by conducting a specific IgE test for each allergy.

Spirometry – Lung Tests

This kind of lung function test is done for asthma. People with allergies usually get asthma problems.

During a spirometry test, patients are instructed to deeply inhale and exhale quickly and forcefully 3 times into a device (spirometer) that evaluates their lung function. The readings are then analyzed by the doctor.

Food Elimination Test

The allergists first begin with a food elimination test where patients eat every food at home and find if any of it reacts with their body.

Starting with a small amount, the patient is given slowly larger quantities of the food. There is a time for observation and evaluation after each dose.

All food challenges are done under the supervision of the doctor.

Medication Test

This test is performed to find any drug allergy in the patient’s body. The process is the same as that of the food elimination test mentioned above. This test is also completed under the physician’s supervision.

Aspirin Desensitization/ Tolerance

AERD, also known as Samter’s triad, is a condition marked by aspirin- or NSAID- induced respiratory reactions in cases with underlying chronic respiratory conditions like asthma, rhinitis, sinusitis, and/or nasal polyps. This procedure is carried out in specific cases who have this condition.

This is a specialized technique that takes place over several days intending to temporarily increase one’s tolerance to aspirin.

The patient starts with a small dose of aspirin which is increased with time. The patients are assessed between every dose and later the patient is given aspirin daily in helping to tolerate aspirin.

All tests are done under the supervision of a lab professional or a doctor. These tests have helped several patients in treating their allergy problems related to any substance.
